  • "Jim" Bennett was a Prisoner of War at Holzminden, North Germany, but escaped through a 150 foot tunnel dug by himself and other prisoners over a period of 8 months. He was one of only 10 escapees to make it home for which he was awarded the Military Cross. He married Edith Elsie Parry. His father and mother were William Samuel Bennett and Harriet Davis. Includes typed "person sheets" (with photographs) for Jim Bennett (1892-1983); Elsie Parry (1897-1990); William Samuel Bennett (1856-1909) and his first wife Ann Hook (1860-1881); Harriet Davis (1857-1951), second wife of William Samuel Bennett; Samuel Elworthy Bennett (1825-1912) and Mary Cornish Davys (1831-1913), father and mother of William Samuel Bennett. The family lived at Middle Farm, Preston Bowyer, Milverton. Includes a rough family tree of the Jewell family of Wiveliscombe and notes taken from the census returns of 1881-1911 concerning the Joyce family at Joyce's Farm, Milverton; copies of photographs of the Bennett and Jewell families, early-mid 20th cent., including images of Joyce's Farm at Milverton, and images of the village of Preston Bowyer, 1970s-1995.
