Description
The Bristers were an old farming family from Barrington and this collection includes farming records, correspondence, diaries, title deeds, photographs and local printed ephemera, predominantly for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In particular it contains a significant number of photographs of Barrington and its inhabitants at the turn of the century, giving insight into village life at this period. The extent of the collection reflects the work of James Alexander Brister (1929-1991) in bringing together the records of his family. James Brister was for many years a librarian at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and appreciated the worth of gathering his family papers together. His work included research into his family history and the compilation of draft pedigrees of the family.
