  • As well as dealing in detail with the Langton family inheritance, this correspondence includes fascinating information on an enormous range of subjects, including life in Bath, social norms and expectations, political events, the course of the war in Spain, the difficulties of Spanish women married to French noblemen and Spanish 'afrancesados', and the practicalities of travel and postal communications. There are three distinct series of correspondence: letters sent by the family in Bath to Miguel Langton in Cadiz, in the year before his death; letters sent by Agustín Butler, a relative and executor of the Will in Cadiz, to the family in Bath; and (the largest part of the collection) a copy letter-book kept by Miguel T Langton. Transcripts of much of the correspondence can be found on the Bath Record Office website at
