  • Born in Bath, served in 3rd Btn 4th (Kings Own) Regiment 1810-15. Following his retirement from service he became a geologist, and was curator of Bath Literary and Scientific Institution 1825-29. A major fossil collector whose collections formed the museum at the Institution, and were absorbed into the Moore Collection. Lonsdale was also Curator and Librarian (1829-42) to the Geological Society in London. From 1842 his ill-health made him move around the West Country, and he died in Bristol aged 77. The collection is comprised of both manuscript and printed works of a geological nature.
